Zombiethon--A Run For Brains is just around the corner!

Is your costume ready?

What: Zombie Fun Run/Walk Fund-raising Event
with Costume Contest

Who: Runners & walkers in Zombie costumes!

When: Halloween Day, Saturday Oct. 31, 2009 4-6pm

Where: Silver Lake Reservoir Recreation Trail, Los Angeles, CA

(meet-up and registration will be held in "the Meadows" on the East Side of the lake, along Silver Lake Boulevard)

Why: All proceeds go to Brain Cancer Research

How: There is no pre-registration. Just show up, and we'll take care of you! Registration and zombie make-overs begin at 4pm. $10 donation entitles you to a participation bib, a goodie bag, and a chance to win the Zombie Costume Contest! For an additional $5 donation, you may have a Zombie make-over by professional special effects make-up artists on site! The Fun Run/Walk starts at 5pm. It's not a formal race, just a fun time for all runners, walkers, and staggerers! Shortly before 6pm, the judges will announce the winners of the Zombie Costume Contest.

"Clothing

According to lore, zombies are the dead that rise from their graves. As a result, most zombies are rather nicely dressed since most people aren't placed into a coffin wearing jeans and a T-shirt. Of course, most zombies appear to have been buried for some time, so you might not want to wear your best suit. If you can find an old suit no longer being worn, all the better. If you don't have access to formal clothes, create a backstory for your zombie of being buried in the clothes you were wearing at the time of death.

Makeup

Again, it is important to remember that most zombies were prepared for burial by a funeral director. As a result, your skin should look a little unnatural. One way to pull this off is by first covering your face in white powder and then applying flesh-colored makeup as well as a very light covering of lipstick. Or you can simply go for the effect of having been buried and not being exposed to the sun for awhile and make your skin very pale. You can give yourself an eerie pallor by covering your face with glow-in-the-dark makeup.

Rotting Flesh

Make realistic rotting flesh at home using simple oatmeal. Just mix enough oatmeal in water until you've created a paste. Apply the paste to your skin and put some makeup over it to match your skin color. As the paste dries, it will begin to flake off and look like skin that has rotted and is starting to peel away from the bone.

Smell of Decomposition

One essential element often overlooked when making a zombie costume is the smell. After all, being buried is bound to make you smell pretty bad by the time life has been breathed back into your body. The best way to make sure you smell like the living dead is to rub your costume with the world's stinkiest cheese: Limburger.

Dirt

You should definitely pepper your costume with dirt and grass to reveal what it's like for a zombie to climb up from six feet under. You might even want to mix some corn syrup and red food coloring to create the effect of bloody fingernails that would probably result from clawing your way out of a coffin."

Zombie Meatloaf Recipe!

Zombie Meatloaf

Serves 8 to 10

Use a food processor to whip this up in a snap. Follow the steps below and you won't need to rinse the food processor bowl in between steps. After each step, empty the contents of the bowl out and set aside.

Process enough bread to make:

2 cups fresh breadcrumbs

Process until finely chopped then set aside:

1/4 cup parsley with
2 cloves garlic (more if expecting vampires)

Process each separately until coarsely chopped (not too fine, mixed texture is good), then place together in large mixing bowl:

3 stalks celery
3 carrots
1 onion

Melt in a large frying pan over medium flame:

1 tablespoon butter
1 tablespoon olive oil

Add the celery mixture and sauté until soft and onions are translucent. Remove from heat to cool.

In the large mixing bowl, mix in the remaining ingredients below, adding the parsley and garlic and the breadcrumbs. When the vegetables have cooled, add them to the mixture.

Note: the only way to really mix this up well is to use your hands—squoosh, squoosh!

1 lb. ground turkey
2 lbs. lean ground beef
1 lb. ground pork sausage
1/2 teaspoon thyme
3/4 teaspoon oregano
3 eggs
1-1/2 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon pepper
1/2 teaspoon paprika
2 teaspoons Worcestershire Sauce
3 teaspoons lemon juice
2—3 tablespoons heavy cream

Shape the meatloaf into a Zombie on a large baking sheet or pan with low sides; placing a sheet of aluminum foil in the bottom helps for easy clean up. Lightly grease the surface before adding the meatloaf.

Apply ketchup decoratively before baking.

Bake in a preheated 350 degree F oven for 1 hour to 1 hour, 10 minutes. Let cool before decorating.

Decorate the Zombie with any of these materials:

ketchup
mustard
fresh parsley
red, orange, and/or yellow bell peppers
other decorative foods like slivered blanched almonds,
olives, cherry tomatoes, etc.

Hints:
The meatloaf will give off lots of juices as you cook it. For a crisper presentation, we used a separate, clean baking sheet, covered it with parchment paper, then carefully used a large spatula to transfer the cooked Zombie to the clean sheet. The appendages (legs and arms) broke at the joints, but that's not important and can either add effect, or be covered up with ketchup.

If not serving immediately, cover the whole tray and place the Zombie in the refrigerator to avoid contamination (remember: keep hot foods hot and cold foods cold to prevent food poisoning). You can reheat it on the same sheet with the parchment paper. Then decorate just before serving.

Zombie make-ups in a pinch!

Homemade make-up recipe:

4 tsp cornstarch

2 tsp water

2 tsp cold cream

paste food coloring

Mix cornstarch, water and cold cream together. Divide mixture into separate cups for multiple colors. Stir in paste food colors of your choice. These colors will wash off easily and leave the skin feeling soft!

Homemade blood recipes:

16 oz. white corn syrup
1 oz. red food coloring
1 oz. liquid dish soap
1 oz. water
A drop of blue food coloring

Mix all ingredients together. Omit dish soap if you prefer "edible blood." Adding a little condensed milk makes it less transparent and more realistic. This blood is extremely sticky and can stain skin and clothes. Before you apply it to skin, rub on some cold cream.

Or try blue liquid laundry starch with a little red food coloring added. This concoction looks real and it dries to a convincing consistency.

For blood splatter, use a spray bottle to apply a mixture of cocoa and water with red food coloring.

Senator Edward Kennedy was diagnosed with and quickly succumbed to the devastation of a malignant glioma. "Malignant gliomas are a type of brain cancer diagnosed in about 9,000 Americans a year -- and the most common type among adults."

"Average survival can range from less than a year for very advanced and aggressive types -- such as glioblastomas -- or to about five years for different types that are slower growing.

But if the tumor is determined to be very advanced and aggressive, like a glioblastoma, survival can be less than a year. Survival for slower growing tumors can be five years.

Surgery can be an option to reduce symptoms as a tumor enlarges and puts pressure on the rest of the brain. Many gliomas infiltrate normal brain tissue instead of forming a solid mass, making it hard to remove much of the tumor."

There are over 120 different types of brain tumors, which make effective treatment complicated. They can be malignant or non-malignant (benign), and in either case, can be just as injurious or life threatening. At this time, brain tumor research is underfunded and the public remains unaware of the magnitude of this disease. The cure rate for most brain tumors is significantly lower than that for many other types of cancer."

It's a community FUN run/walk event held on Halloween, Saturday October 31, 2009, from 4-6pm, along the recreation trail around Silver Lake Reservoir in Los Angeles, California. This event is organized to raise donations for Brain Cancer Research. All of the proceeds will be donated to the local charity, City of Hope, to find a cure for this devastating disease. Your $10 donation will grant you a numbered participation bib and goodie bag! This is a family-friendly event, and everyone is encouraged to arrive in their finest zombie attire. If you don’t have access to zombie make-ups, don’t worry, for an additional donation of $5, you may have your make-up applied by professional special effects make-up artists on site! Not a runner? Don't worry! It's not a formal race, just a chance for everyone to get out there and have some fun while supporting a very important cause.
